The Department of Human Services (DHS) is the state's health and human services agency. Established in 1971 as the Department of Human Resources, it changed to its current name in 1999. DHS is the largest department in state government, employing approximately 9,500 people and operating with a budget of $8.5 billion during 2001-03.
