...SugarCRM also announced that it will be releasing a new Sugar Suite distribution under the Microsoft Community License with the Sugar Suite 4.5 version. This license is part of the Microsoft Shared Source Initiative, a program through which Microsoft shares source code with customers, partners and governments worldwide.
|
Doesn't this suggest v4.5 will be release under a dual license? Or, a new forked distribution?
Regards,
Rich

I am very surprised that Sugar has not come out with an announcement/explanation.
We have been trying to interpret a short public announcement no for a full business day now...

Re: SugarCRMs' deal with Microsoft
Yep - pretty clearly we all need a forum post from Sugar clarifying a number of issues:
- reaffirming their continued support for both Linux and Windows Server platforms
- ditto for Apache and IIS
- detailing some of the specific benefits to come from the MS co-operation
- clarifying the details of the license to be applied to future Sugar releases - 4.2, 4.5 - and what effect if any it can be expected to have on its customers and partners
And I'm sure we'll get one before too long.

Re: SugarCRMs' deal with Microsoft
Further to the clarification of intent. It would be very useful to know if the access to the MS code for integration will result is development for MS specific integration or if that will be available to Linux installations too.
Eg. AD integration, an kind of Exchange integration etc.
If not, will it mean a second-rate Sugar product for Linux users - with more bells and whistles for those using the Windows installation?

Re: SugarCRMs' deal with Microsoft
This is the jist of what we announced with Microsoft today.
1. We will introduce with 4.5 in the May/June timeframe a new Sugar Open Source distribution optimized for the windows platform (IIS, MSSQLServer).
2. We will support the Microsoft Community License – which is very much like the MPL for this new distro.
3. No changes to core Sugar Open Source and the Sugar SPL (MPL).
4. No changes in our commitment to Linux or any reprioritization of features for the Linux platform
Basically, we are just going to offer a second Sugar Open Source distro for the windows platform for those who prefer Windows over Linux (other OS’s). We remain and will always remain fully committed to the Linux platform.
Regards,
John Roberts

Re: SugarCRMs' deal with Microsoft
Yes the latest MySQL *does* support stored procedures but a stored procedure written for MS-SQL will not necessarily work on MySQL without soem tweaking. Of course, it would be possible to write the code in such a way that it always works with whatever the back-end database - if you were so inclined. If, however, there was an incentive not to.....!! Uh oh, may be thinking to deep here!?

Re: SugarCRMs' deal with Microsoft
Fuelling the paranoia (from DevShed.com)
"Stored procedures are an integral part of the Oracle and MS SQL databases. MySQL has joined the bandwagon with its latest developer release. MySQL currently supports the SQL: 2003 syntax but will support T-SQL and Oracle PL/SQL syntaxes in the future. "
T-SQL is wot MS-SQL Server uses.
See See - I'm not paranoid - why does EVERYONE say that about me???
Mind you - the Sugar team could crush all this by talking to us....???
