Custom Menu(s) tab control for linking external sites in iframes

I'm a new sugarcrm administrator. I was disappointed that external sites are managed through the My Portal module. It's a great module, and giving users the ability to add their website resources is excellent.

The problem I see is that for businesses like mine that use a suite of web applications, I am forced to use a CMS wrapper like Joomla or Drupal, when in fact I'd be very happy to have SugarCRM be the landing page for my empoyees and partners. As long as I can toggle display of menus and menu items per team designation.

The best I can achieve with the My Portal module is to use Group Tabs, where all of the sites are listed under tools. That's messy, gives me no ability to categorize the links and has no ACL approach to displaying the links.

I wouldn't want to replace the My Portal function, but I would like to see a custom menu editor that I've grown accustomed to in the CMS projects listed above.

I see now it is possible to disable grouping and hide "My Portal" yet still have the portal sites in the menu as separate tabs, which is one workaround.

But is it possible to duplicate the My Portal module? Making a few duplicates of the "My Portal" module, combined with changing the "My Portal" labels to something more descriptive would provide a method of grouping external web sites.
