In fact, my understanding is that a prospect someone in a cold list. Someone who does not know you. If he/she responds to the campaign, he/she should become a lead, someone who knows you, but whom you do not have enough info to consider an opportunity. Finally, after some qualification routines, he/she would become a contact and opportunity.
So, the prospect should become a lead. But there are many other things involved if we go deep into marketing/sales activities and the sales cycle. For example, my campaign is telemarketing and I plan to make calls to a list of "strangers". Sugar won't let prospects to have activities assigned...
