Newsletter/e-mail campaign question

Hello.

We're trying to create a newsletter system that would work with SugarCRM, but have run into a few problems. Does anybody here have experience on the matter?

First of all, does Sugar's in-built e-mail campaign feature work well enough? This far we've figured out that it allows personalisation and unsubscribe, but can't find any way for users to subscribe (on their own) to any newsletter, nor any easy way to have multiple newsletters that would be sent periodically.

Second, if it does not, does anybody know any other good (preferably Open Source) mass mailing/newsletter software that would work with Sugar? Share databases and such. Are there any known issues to such integration?

You would have to use a lead capture that would register them into the system with a SOAP Call to SugarCRM. There is not a way to directly have SugarCRM capture a signup.
