Hi
Ive been using sugar for email campaigns for about a year, I stay on top of updates and just put the latest one on
My main concern is this new listing (or I never saw it before): What does suppressed by email address or domain mean?
I have a good number of addresses in that list after sending and they are all valid emails that have gone out fine in ;ast campaigns. whats the scoop?
My latest has a few problems: messages were only sending a couple at a time from the queue: i had it at 500 and lowered it to 30 to see if that would help w/being seen as spam. i managed to get most of the emails out but theres about 15 sitting in the queue still. the log says this:
Thu May 10 08:42:25 2007,339 [13720] FATAL SugarCRM - SugarPHPMailer encountered an error: SMTP error: the following recipients failed (an email address is listed here which may actually not be valid..anyhow.. then it says:)
Thu May 10 08:42:25 2007,403 [13720] FATAL SugarCRM - Email delivery FAILURE:Array

well, for some reason my queued emails went out today doing a manual send,
still unclear on the suppressed emails if anyone can give some guidance for a source of reading material on the subject.
thanks

just applied the 4.51d patch, same deal. im sure theres a good reason for them showing up as suppressed. i just searched all the manuals and couldnt find the word suppressed . i opened a support case a couple days ago no answer yet on that either.

While no expert on Sugar, I belive "supressed" means a list of users that will*not* be sent to. This is usefull when you say "send to all users, but supress where state <> MA".
I hope this helps.

thanks Dave,
yes of course that makes sense, except i dont recall making any changes or setting any items to suppress the emails, i did use the wizard for the first time on this campaign and wonder if theres anything in that wizard that i may have inadvertantly checked off. its unfortunate that the list of suppressed emails doesnt say what condition is causing it so id know where to look. these are all emails (only about 10 out of a couple hundred) that usually do receive my letter. later this wk i am going to make a new short campaign with those users and try again. thanks again

ok some progress: seems the ONLY documentation (that I can find) on the suppression list is in the wiki:
http://www.sugarcrm.com/wiki/index.php?title=HOW-To_guide_for_Email-Campaigns
The section mentioning suppression lists apparently has to do with target lists:
4. Add targets list, a collection of people who will receive the campaign email.
You can add leads, contacts, targets and/or users to a target list. A target list can either be a list of targets to send emails to, or, pattern of/a list of email address exempted from the campaign. lists of type default, test and seed belong to the first category.
Target List Type: Default: Everybody in this list will receive the campaign email.
Seed: List of people who need to be notified when a campaign has been sent. The will receive a copy of the email. Typically you would add users of the application to this list.
Test: List of people who would receive the test emails, Can be used to work on the email messaging before it is sent outside.
Suppress - By Id: List of people exempted from the Campaign email. say for a campaign you have a default list of 100 targets of this list you do not want to send emails to 20 targets, first add these targets to a list of this type and then associate the list with the campaign.
Suppress - By Email Address: Same function as previous type. In this case exemption is based on email address comparison.
Suppress - By Domain: with this type you get an additional field "No emails to Domain", you can set a domain name in this field. say you want to suppress emails to <everybody>@yahoo.com, set yahoo in the domain field.
Target lists are integrated with import functionality. After a successfully importing a list of targets you get an opportunity to add imported records to a target list.
Target lists are integrated with reports, you can link output of a report to a target list, this feature is enabled for leads, contacts and target reports.
After defining the target lists associate them with the campaign.
I checked my campaign and the target list IS of type "default" and is the same list that I have used on other campaigns. I am left thinking there might be a bug in the email campaign wizard (as thats the only thing I did different). OH - I am using PHP5 and Mysql 5 now, not sure if i missed any documentation where that might be a compatibility issue (?).

update:
I created a new target list manually, making extra special care that it was of type default, removed the old target list from the campaign and tried sending to this new target list of the same emails previously suppressed: it suppressed them again. I made a new email campaign without the wizard (using this temporary target list of the same addresses suppressed) and it sent out fine. so somehow it looks like the suppression list setting gets applied to the whole email campaign.

Hi florenceit, thanks for the detective work. Can you please enter a bug in bugs.sugarcrm.com (http://bugs.sugarcrm.com) so we can track this?

Reported as bug # 12950
No problem, I figure might as well let my experiences benefit others in the true open source sense: however I did purchase a sugar network subscription and opened a case about 4 days ago without even a "expect a response w/in xx days".
fortunately I rarely need support, but is there some better way to get some response?

Hi florenceit, I think we know why the case you submitted (case #15380) fell into a void. It appears that the Request Type was "SugarExchange Support" rather than "Customer Support" and the case was inadvertantly routed to the incorrect individuals.
We're correcting this now and will get to the bottom of it.

Suppressions lists are always global within campaign, it does not matter how you create the campaign.
Evan if you send the same campaign multiple times, messages will be sent only once, Does not matter whether you have a suppression list or not. Duplicate check by email_address is always active.
Most useful suppression list types are suppress by email address and suppress by domain.
You can have multiple suppression lists per campaign. The wizard by default creates only 1 suppression list. but you can always add more. If you are creating a campaign of type newsletter , you should stick with only one supression (unsubscription) list.

Just a quick FYI for you all. I've managed to prevent this behaviour in our installation of SugOS by commenting out the third 'blocked' test in modules/EmailMan/EmailMan.php - it's the test labelled "test for duplicate email address by marketing ID". Given Ajay's comment above, I'd like to suggest that the "dup check by email" be *disabled* for test lists - you are, in all likelihood, going to need to send a test more than once (and it appears to not work as intended any how).
I'm still getting my head around the guts of Sugar, but I can see from the history I keep (basically, archive before I roll out an update) that this particular file didn't change between 4.5.1c and 4.5.1d, so I don't understand why this effect is only being seen since 4.5.1d...

I have just installed the new 5.1 and this problem is still there. So I just commented out the section in the php file as mentioned by MLCrane. Now it works like I expected it to.
If I press manual send as administrator then why should Sugar overrule that? At least give me a checkbox somewhere to say it is okay to send duplicates.
